From Smash Hit Board Game to Exciting Kaiju-Powered Video Game, King of Tokyo Launches on Amazon Luna

Published 15-Sep-2026

This month, bestselling boardgame King of Tokyo comes to GameNight as a compelling video game that Prime members can now play for free on Amazon Luna.

If you’ve been living under a rock, like some of the more famous movie Kaiju, and don’t know the game yet, King of Tokyo is best described by Matthieu Sechet, brand manager at Microids. “King of Tokyo is a turn-based, dice-driven strategy game in which up to 6 players control giant, cartoon-style monsters battling to dominate Tokyo. Within a light narrative inspired by classic kaiju films each creature competes for power and survival in a chaotic, city-smashing showdown.”

“You can play solo against AI or with up to 6 players in local multiplayer. You’ll find the same mechanics as the original board game. Roll the dice to heal yourself, attack or win victory points and use the best strategy to win and be the King of Tokyo. The first player to reach 20 Victory Points or be the last alive wins.”

Originally released in 2011 as a tabletop board game, King of Tokyo quickly became a global hit with over one million copies sold. Now in 2026, the popular game has been reimagined for Amazon Luna, joining a growing GameNight lineup. “The game loop and the gameplay of King of Tokyo remain the same on the GameNight version as our goal is to respect the initial material represented by the board game,” offered Anthony Bouraba, producer at Microids. “The main challenge was to create a new feeling while playing with a phone as a controller and to provide an experience enjoyable by everyone. The biggest challenges were to adapt the UI and use the mobile controller to improve the user experience, as if they were playing the board game.”

King of Tokyo shines on Amazon Luna because every turn is a quick mix of luck and choices. Players are constantly deciding whether to chase points, heal up, buy a powerful card, or keep pressuring the monsters in Tokyo, creating non-stop tension and table drama. It’s easy to learn, plays in minutes, and is chaotic...in a good way.

In addition to the compelling gameplay and story-driven tension, King of Tokyo on Amazon Luna brings some unique aspects through its transformation from a board game to a video game. “The video game introduces its own artistic personality, with a stylized Japanese woodblock-inspired art direction developed in close collaboration with the original board game publisher IELLO Games,” added Matthieu. “This gives the game a unique visual identity while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original.”

The result is a unique and compelling new addition to Amazon Luna’s GameNight collection of easy to pick up social and party games. Free to Prime members, King of Tokyo is available now to enjoy solo or with family and friends, right from your living room TV and phone.
