Published Mar. 17, 2026

Developed by Marmalade Game Studio, The Game of Life 2 is the sequel to Hasbro’s beloved original, The Game of Life. Spin the iconic spinner, travel through life, and make choices along the way that will shape who you become.

However, in The Game of Life 2, money is no longer the only path to success – so what will you choose? Find your happiness, whether that means money and fame or academic fulfillment and a dozen cats! Will you be an Engineer or a Dino Dentist? Play to find out.

In celebration of their achievement, we sat down with Paulo Duarte, Lead Game Designer, and Sander Eskens, Lead Engineer, from Marmalade Game Studio to hear about their journey to expand on a classic.

The Game of Life 2 is now on Luna, and this GameNight title is free to play for Prime Members and Luna subscribers.

The Game of Life is a classic board game beloved by players around the world for generations. What was it like making a sequel to such an iconic game?

“The best part of making a sequel to a beloved game like The Game of Life is the sheer potential,” said Paulo Duarte, Lead Game Designer at Marmalade Game Studio. “The original board game is such a wonderful, wholesome game, and there was a huge scope for us to add in new mechanics that would modernize it for today’s players.

“Having already worked with Hasbro to create the video game version of the original title, we had the perfect foundation for creating its sequel. We were well versed in the core brand already, which meant we had the unique benefit of being able to remain faithful to its iconic elements while identifying ways to update the overall feel of the game.

“The ultimate goal was to create something that could bring the whole family together – something exciting and relevant for kids and teens, yet still familiar and recognizable to their parents and grandparents.”

What was the inspiration behind adding new paths to winning the game, outside of accumulating the most money?

“The biggest inspiration behind adding additional ways to win The Game of Life 2 was today’s changing definition of success,” continued Paulo. “Where once it was almost a requirement to amass wealth to be considered successful, nowadays we see talented artists and creators celebrated for achievements beyond financial success.

“We also wanted to add in a route to win that reflected people’s unique journeys through life – for many, finding love is key to a happy life, while others see the pursuit of knowledge as their primary goal. Incorporating differing views was key to modernizing The Game of Life 2 compared to its predecessor.

“So now, whether you consider wealth, love or knowledge to be the key to a successful life, there are many paths in The Game of Life 2 that will accommodate that.”

When updating a classic game, what were some of the most exciting things your team got to create in order to bring The Game of Life 2 to a new generation?

“The team loved designing and creating new outfits and vehicle options to let players live countless lives and roles within the game,” answered Paulo. “For kids dreaming of life as a dragon, there’s an outfit for that. For grown-ups yearning for a life by the sea, they can take a well-earned digital vacation to the Sandy Shores as a tourist.

“We also created a number of vehicles that adapt to player choices, becoming bigger to fit in their growing family if needed.

“Speaking of families, we were excited to add in the option of second chances and ‘do-overs’ later in life. Players can choose to go back to school, change careers, marry and have children further along in the game, reflecting how life can change in a heartbeat, no matter what stage you’re at.”

With The Game of Life 2, Marmalade Game Studio took a legendary board game and brought it to life in digital form. What are some of your team’s favorite additions to the experience that are only possible in a digital format?

“One of the team’s favorite additions to the digital game compared to the physical was the ability to bring the iconic pegs to life,” said Sander Eskens, Lead Engineer at Marmalade Game Studio. “There was no way we were going to replace them with avatars – the little guys are just too fundamental to The Game of Life 2’s overall wholesomeness. So instead, we really brought them into the spotlight with vibrant animations, letting them move, emote, share a kiss at a wedding, and cheer when they graduate.

“We also enjoyed the freedom to explore numerous worlds within The Game of Life 2 without being restricted by the physical game’s requirements. Instead of multiple boxes, boards, and pieces, players get a truly seamless experience, diving into different universes and exploring countless lives without any need for set-up – or tidying away afterwards.”

The Game of Life 2 feels like such a natural fit for Amazon Luna and GameNight. What are some things that you think players are going to like about playing the game with their family and friends via GameNight?

“The best part about playing The Game of Life 2 with friends and family is that no two games are ever the same,” said Sander. “Everyone will get to choose different life paths each time they play, and the whole group gets to watch them unfold together. It’s the perfect game for GameNight, as it is easy to pick up, yet offers so many ways to be mastered!

“Plus, Amazon Luna players get access to several exciting features unique to the platform, including local leaderboards that will add a competitive edge to family game nights, and in-game reactions complete with sound effects – brilliant when everyone is in the same room together while playing.”

The Game of Life 2 features an impressive array of themed worlds, from a Superhero World to Under the Sea to Haunted Hills. How does your team approach designing these worlds, and how do they change the gameplay experience beyond just aesthetics?

“The Game of Life 2 has eleven worlds in total, and each one has been carefully designed to feel like a proper parallel universe,” answered Paulo. “Everything within the game has been adapted to match each theme, giving players the ultimate immersive experience.

“The life paths offered differ in each world as a result. For example, in the Under the Sea World, players can become a Pirate and seek their fortune upon the ocean, and in the Sweet Haven World, there’s the chance to graduate from the Candy College as a Cake Designer.”

One last question. Marmalade Game Studio has brought several beloved board games to life digitally. What's something players might be surprised to learn about the development process?

“The most surprising thing about the development of The Game of Life 2 was just how different the end result could have been,” said Sander.

“Other than knowing it needed to be an updated version of the original board game, we allowed ourselves a lot of freedom to explore different ideas. We went through a fascinating process deciding what should be changed and how we were going to modernize the title.

“This meant that, in the early stages of development, we tried out all sorts of potential game mechanics, art styles, and more. There were several directions we could have gone in at that point, and only at the end of pre-production did we have a clear picture of what The Game of Life 2 needed to be like.

“Any one of those discarded ideas from our initial brainstorming would have resulted in an entirely different game.”

Now available on Amazon Luna, The Game of Life 2 is more than a simple follow-up; it’s a bold expansion of one of our most beloved family games, developed for new and old players alike.
